Hollyleaf Healing is a California-based therapeutic practice that helps adults heal from the lasting impact of trauma, with a focus on those whose lives have been impacted by incarceration or the child welfare system.
The practice is named after the hollyleaf cherry, a California native plant that can survive wildfires and regenerate from its strong root system. Its resilience reflects a core belief at Hollyleaf Healing: difficult experiences can leave lasting impacts, but they do not have to define the rest of your story. Healing can take many forms and often happens both inside and outside of therapy—through community, creativity, music, movement, spirituality, relationships, and other experiences that help us reconnect with ourselves and the world around us. Therapy can be a place to make sense of your experiences, explore what healing looks like for you, and better understand how the past continues to shape the present.
In addition to providing therapy, I offer clinical supervision for professionals seeking support in their work, opportunities to deepen their clinical skills, and space to process the emotional impact of caring for others. I also provide independent clinical assessments for clients navigating court proceedings, offering thorough and objective evaluations that can help inform important decisions and next steps.
Maggie Ross, LCSW
I am a Licensed Clinical Social Worker and the founder of Hollyleaf Healing. Over the past 15 years, I have worked across direct clinical practice, legislative advocacy, nonprofit leadership, and community-based initiatives, giving me both clinical expertise and a broad understanding of the challenges many of my clients navigate.
In my therapy practice, I draw from trauma-informed, evidence-based approaches including Narrative Therapy, Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), and mindfulness-based interventions. This fall I am excited to add EMDR to my practice. I believe people are shaped by many influences—including family histories, communities, culture, systems, and lived experiences—and I strive to create a collaborative therapeutic relationship that honors each person's unique story. My goal is to help clients better understand themselves, process pain and the past, and move toward meaningful and lasting change.
In addition to therapy, I provide clinical supervision, as well as independent clinical assessments, court reports, and expert testimony. My work is rooted in a longstanding interest in the intersections of mental health, social welfare, and the legal system, particularly how systems impact individual lives and communities. My specialized experience working at the intersection of mental health and the legal system allows me to bring a thoughtful and nuanced perspective to these roles.
The inspiration for Hollyleaf Healing grew from my experience growing up in Lake County, California, where wildfires could transform entire landscapes overnight. I was struck by the way native plants returned after destruction—often stronger and more vibrant than before. That experience continues to inform my belief in people's capacity to adapt, recover, and create new possibilities in the aftermath of difficult experiences.
Testimonials
“Supervision with Maggie has profoundly shaped my growth as a social worker and as a person working through systems that so often ask us to fragment ourselves to survive them. Her compassion, steadiness and curiosity made me feel genuinely seen and understood. In moments when the world felt heavy or disorienting, Maggie created a judgement free space for honesty, accountability, self reflection and tenderness.”
-ASW Supervisee
“I worked with Maggie for just over a year after escaping a violent relationship. I had my walls up and only agreed to therapy after a lot of persuading from my family. Maggie was kind and patient from the beginning and took the time I needed to feel safe. Overtime she helped me recognize patterns in my relationships throughout my life that had impacted my view of myself without me even realizing it. She helped me reconnect with who I am and what I want to get out of life, outside of being a survivor.”
- Former Therapy Client
“I retained Maggie as an expert in a dependency case and asked her to conduct an assessment of the appropriateness of a relative for placement. She reviewed relevant research, court records, observed visits, assessed the home and conducted extensive clinical interviews with the family. She testified clearly, calmly, and demonstrated nuanced knowledge in the areas of addiction, substance use, harm reduction methods and the importance of maintaining familial bonds.”
